The Basement Project recently welcomed local clothing company Motel Rocks, who generously hosted a special clothing event for the young women we support. The team arrived with a wide selection of brand-new clothing items and invited attendees to choose an outfit free of charge — a thoughtful gesture at a time when many of our clients are facing financial hardship or are at risk of homelessness.
The event was incredibly well organised, with Ellie and Abi from Motel Rocks creating a warm, respectful, and welcoming environment throughout the day. Their understanding of the challenges many of our young people face shone through, helping everyone to feel at ease. We hoped to welcome around 30 young women and were delighted to see 31 attend.
Feedback from those who came along was overwhelmingly positive. Many told us they initially felt nervous, but quickly relaxed thanks to the supportive atmosphere. Several described the experience as “brilliant” and “amazing,” with one young woman sharing, “Really, really helpful for people who are struggling.” Another added, “Thank you for everything today!”
For one of our young women, the event came at exactly the right time — she had recently been forced to throw away all of her clothes due to severe mould in her flat. Being able to replace essentials at no cost made a huge difference. Others expressed similar gratitude, highlighting how difficult it can be to afford clothing while managing tight budgets.
Support workers also shared the impact on clients they brought along. One young lady, navigating the challenges of trying to live on a very limited income, left with new jeans, jumpers, and a jacket — items she would never have been able to purchase herself. Staff noted how much this boosted her confidence and sense of being valued. Another young woman, with just a handful of items at home, was thrilled to leave with clothes she could wear straight away.
The Basement Project is deeply grateful to Motel Rocks for their kindness, energy, and commitment to creating such a positive experience. The day not only provided practical help but also lifted spirits, restored confidence, and reminded our young women that they deserve care and support.
We look forward to working with Motel Rocks again and truly appreciate their generosity towards our community.
